As part of its 2010 Housing America campaign, NAHRO will hold a poster contest for children associated with affordable housing and community development programs owned or administered by NAHRO member agencies. Posters will reflect the national theme of “What Home Means to Me.” The contest is a collaborative effort of NAHRO’s chapter/state, regional, and national organizations. National honorees will be selected from chapter/state-level winning entries.

Poster Specifications:

  • Theme - "What Home Means to Me"
  • Size - No larger than 22"x28"
  • Media – Contestant may use any art media (marker, crayon, paint, collage, textiles, etc.), but please consider that posters will need to be mailed and reproduced.

Eligibility and Selection Categories:

Contest participation is open to all children residing in affordable housing assisted directly (i.e., public or Section 8-assisted housing) by or supported under community development and affordable housing programs (i.e., CDBG, HOME, LIHTC) administered by a NAHRO member agency.

Three age categories of competition: Elementary - K to 5th grade; Middle - 6th to 8th grade; and High – 9th to 12th grade.

National Competition:

National honorees will be selected by a Blue Ribbon panel of judges to be assembled by NAHRO staff.
The National Jury will select four honorees in each of the three categories, plus an overall Grand Prize honoree.

National Prizes: National honorees will receive U.S. Savings Bonds. The 12 national honorees will receive a $100 savings bond and the Grand Prize honoree will receive a $500 savings bond. The Grand Prize honoree and his or her family will also be provided with transportation to and lodging at NAHRO’s March 2011 National Legislative Conference in Washington, DC. All National honorees will also receive a framed certificate.

Poster Calendar and Display of 13 National Winning Entries:

  • Poster Calendar: National NAHRO will develop a 2011 calendar based on the 13 nationally-selected posters. NAHRO will obtain a sponsor for the calendar.
  • Narrative and Release of Nationally-Selected Entries: National honorees will be asked to provide a short narrative as to their poster theme and must sign a release making their entry the property of NAHRO and permitting duplication/publication thereof.
  • Display of National Honorees: NAHRO will also seek permission to display selected entries in the U.S. Capitol.
